Are investment casting and precision casting the same process?

Investment casting and precision casting are not exactly the same process, but there is a close connection between them.

Investment casting, also known as lost wax casting, is a casting process. This process uses a fusible material (such as wax or plastic) to make a fusible model, and then coats the model with several layers of special refractory paste, which is dried and hardened to form a monolithic shell. Then the inner model is melted and poured out to obtain the parting surface mold. Then, the molten metal is poured into the mold shell, and after the metal solidifies, the mold shell is broken and removed, and the metal casting whose shape is consistent with the model can be obtained. The characteristic of this process is that it can cast parts with complex shapes, and the casting surface is smooth and the size is accurate.

Precision casting is a broader concept, which refers to a series of processes to obtain precise size castings. Precision casting includes not only investment casting, but also a variety of other casting methods, such as metal mold casting, pressure casting and so on. These processes are designed to achieve high precision, high quality and high performance requirements of castings through specific process means and material selection.

Therefore, it can be said that investment casting is a specific process method in precision casting, and precision casting is a larger category that includes a variety of casting methods.
